The talented and popular 80’s and 90’s musician, songwriter, and former lead singer for the group ’Wham!’, George Michael, created arguably the best video ever, that payed homage to fashion and the role a supermodel plays in the world of fashion. His video “Too Funky” was directed by famed fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who also created all of the wardrobe for the video; that also features some of the most successful and beautiful supermodels of our era… Linda Evangelista, Nadja Auermann, Emma Sjöberg, Estelle Hallyday, Shana Zadrick, Tyra Banks and Emma Balfour. The concept for the video is based on a film called “Freedom 90”, and captures the behind-the-scenes chaos of a fashion show and the antics of the beautiful and powerful supermodels that strut down the runway. The visually stimulating, high fashion “Too Funky” was most definitely ahead of it’s time and has been very influential, as current well-known artists like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, to name a few, have been seen in very similar costumes.
Check out the Director’s Cut below that is more racy than the TV cut. Thierry Mugler’s Director’s Cut features even more models, like Beverly Peele, as well as former male models turned actors, Justin Chambers from ’Grey’s Anatomy‘ and Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou, who was actually discovered by Mugler.
Has the French Powerhouse SAINT LAURENT PARIS gone too far left with their new ad campaign featuring Courtney Love, Ariel Pink, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, and Marilyn Manson! Creative Director, Hedi Slimane chose a grunge rocker aesthetic, which is antagonistic to Saint Laurent’s normal refined, classic, sophisticated, couture image. Slimane has always pushed the envelope somewhat, if you recall he was responsible for the name change of Yves Saint Laurent to the present Saint Laurent Paris. For some, the answer is clear as they would say Slimane is out of order and has crossed the line. For others, it may be a more difficult assessment because while clothes do not define who a person is, image is an imperative to successful branding and consistency is key. However, models and actresses are the predictable choice and creativity is unpredictable, and a creative mind must express in various ways. So, do you think Slimane has damaged the image of Saint Laurent or will this help to expand the brand beyond its boxed image?
